A new set of rules is scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2014 that will change how we personally purchase health insurance coverage and how healthcare coverage is delivered.

Going forward, everyone will be required to have health insurance or pay a penalty.  Coverage includes private health insurance obtained individual or through an employer, Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP, Veterans Affairs or Tricare.

Guaranteed coverage regardless of pre-existing conditions and consistency of coverage cost regardless of health history and gender is new.

Every state will have an insurance exchange – an online marketplace – where individuals and small businesses can go to select coverage from among all the qualified private health plans available in their area.

Coverage subsidies and maximum insurance coverage cost will control the price that many individuals pay.
